Morrisons Herne Bay

Roofing Today Magazine

The car park at Morrisons’ Herne Bay store in Kent is located on the roof of the retail store itself, split over two levels providing approximately 80 spaces. The existing asphalt waterproof surface of the car park was badly damaged and split over the years had been allowing significant water ingress into the store below. The asphalt itself – covering some 2,500m2 – has been completely re-waterproofed by Cemplas using Sika’s rapid-curing Sikafloor Pronto system for car parks.   The fully-reinforced Pronto 32 system was applied to all areas including up / down ramps. Acting as Principal Contractor working directly for Wm Morrisons Supermarkets, Cemplas also carried out localised concrete repairs to the semi-circular vehicular access ramp.   If you’d like to know more about this project visit our website to download our project case study: Morrisons-Herne-Bay

Asphalt surfaces can in most cases be re-waterproofed very successfully by overlaying with a rapid-curing, cold, liquid-applied system either partially or fully reinforced. BUT … if you’re going to do it, please contact Cemplas for some advice first!!!

On the Case at Scotland Yard

Roofing Today Magazine

Cemplas have installed Delta’s cavity membrane systems to the interior of the sub-basement and basement levels of the Metropolitan Police’s new home near Whitehall. Formerly known as Whitehall Police Station, the Curtis Green Building- which began construction in 1935 serving as part of the Met's three-building headquarters during the Second World War as well as housing the forensics and technology departments – is the new home for New Scotland Yard.  Fascinating project!

The Problem with Movement Joints . . .

Roofing Today Magazine

Who can spot the obvious design flaws here? So often, joint design is the throw-away ending when a structure is built. So when it comes to designing a remedial solution, you’d hope that the horizontal/vertical junction would be re-detailed & corrected. Unfortunately, In 99 out of 100 cases, it isn’t! The result? A building that continues to let in water …

The Icon, Basildon

Roofing Today Magazine

ICON is a prominent development of 121 apartments in the heart of Basildon recently developed by Hollybrook Developments. As part of the building’s conversion to a residential block, Cemplas have installed a fully waterproof surface to the residents' internal car park situated on the first floor of this 10-storey building.

Roofing Today Magazine

The resident’s car park is situated directly above Eastgate Learning Centre which itself is situated on the ground floor and it was imperative that no water from the car park gets through into the education centre below.

We’ve had some great feedback . . .

They have been a credit to Cemplas and everyone associated with the company should be very proud. Cemplas and Tremco illbruck reunite to refit office car park

An office car park in the Winnersh Triangle has been upgraded 17 years after it opened by the same contractor using the same materials. The car park at 200 Berkshire Place serves offices occupied by tenants including Sage and Amdocs.

When erected in 2000, contractor Cemplas protected the top deck of the car park using the Tretodek, Tremco’s polyurethane (PU) waterproofing system. After almost two decades’ service, the system was starting to show its age and the landlord wanted a new 10-year warranted system.

Fidelity appointed Resolute Property Consultancy to specify a replacement system and supervise its application. During the period since the original application, tremco illbruck has undergone a rebranding and its products had evolved. The Tretodek had been replaced by a new Tremco PU system. However, because the original system was felt to have performed well beyond its original design life, Resolute founder and partner, Mark Goulding, contacted tremco illbruck and spoke to sales manager Peter Bitten for advice.

“The old Tretodek system has a 10-year warranty and had reached the end of its natural life without anything but the most basic maintenance, so it had done pretty well,” said Bitten. “But it had been installed on a newbuild. The car park is now in constant use and there was no possibility of closing it for any length of time.”

Cemplas Assesses the Health of Hospital Parking

Hospital Parking Article. Graeme Middleton, Cempas. February 2017

The perennial problem faced by NHS Trusts offering parking facilities for staff, patients and visitors is that they are land-locked. Often in urban environments, they are unable to spread their footprint in the quest for space to erect new structures, so they adopt the solution of going upwards. This makes absolute sense.

Parking capacity can be increased four or five-fold on a comparatively small area by building a multistorey structure. With modern design and construction techniques, it’s simple enough to erect a 300-space car park with pre-cast segments and a lightweight powdercoated steel frame, clad with some architecturally pleasing metalwork that cunningly disguises it as some futuristic-looking structure of purpose – the purpose being that it becomes a cash generator. Let’s face it, parking is a fantastic revenue stream to any cash-strapped public-sector-funded organisation, so these structures are being erected with increasing frequency. It’s great news for the construction industry, and it solves two problems straight away – creating more parking capacity and increasing revenues. But there are worrying signs of trouble ahead.

Cemplas Plays Part in South Bank Centre Revival

South Bank Revival

As part of a two-year, £28 million restoration of London’s prestigious South Bank Centre, Cemplas have recently carried out extensive concrete restoration and repair works to the internal concrete architectural elements of this globally famous arts venue.

As part of Europe’s largest centre for the arts – which attracts more than six million visitors annually - the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Hayward Gallery & Purcell Room are being restored to their original character which includes renovating board-finished concrete walls and coffered concrete ceilings.

“We’re or course used to working on the outside of landmark buildings” commented Chris Saunders, Cemplas Estimating & Contracts Manager “however the challenge of working on the inside of an iconic building such as the South Bank Centre was one that we absolutely relished. With the decorative wooden panelled interior for example, it has been essential to retain exacting humidity controls whilst carrying out concrete cleaning with essentially dry & water-free solutions inside the building”.

Remmers’ Arte Mundit product – a ‘peelable’ poultice – was applied to most surfaces of the exposed internal concrete elements creating an elastic film over the surface which when peeled away, removed superficial dirt that had built up on the concrete over the years since the centre’s opening back in the 1960s.

The rear walls of the Queen Elizabeth Hall stage also saw black paint removed using the ‘Doff’ method and Tensid Tavec 201 Biodegradable paint remover.

Once cleaned, repairs have had to be carried out to areas of the decorative concrete and blended in to ensure that they are not easily visible.

Cemplas achieves Competent Roofer Status

Cemplas are delighted to announce that they have achieved Competent Roofer status, the Government-licensed scheme that allows professional roofing contractors to self-certify that their refurbishment work complies with Building Regulations within England & Wales.
The scheme - administered on behalf of the Government by the NFRC of which Cemplas are also members – ensures that when property owners carry out roof repair and/or replacement works, they have the added reassurance that the work being carried out meets the exacting standards of the Building Regulations.
On receiving the Competent Roofer Certification, Cemplas MD Tony Blencowe said “To achieve this status, contractors are rigorously audited and their work inspected prior to acceptance so naturally we’re delighted that we have become approved members of this important scheme”.
Commenting also on achieving Competent Roofer status, Archie Gemmell – Head of Cemplas’ Roofing division – said “We offer our clients a high quality service & professional application. Being Competent Roofer certified gives our clients the peace of mind knowing that we are regulated and thoroughly reliable and that our work complies with Building Regulations”.
