Cliff edge detail to break the connection between the cliff edge and the car park
Located at Torquay harbour, the Abbey Sands car park has a precast concrete deck comprising of Bison beam planks set against a cliff edge.
Before: Blisters Caused By Outgassing
Before: Cliff Edge & Car Park Connected
During: Coating Removal With Weigh Restrictions
The existing waterproof coatings had failed due to a primer issue while the proximity of the cliff edge allowed water ingress into the screed, causing outgassing and subsequent failure of the system. The podium deck had a strict 2-tonne weight limit requiring careful consideration of the coating removal equipment.
A Terminator Stripper with a 1-tonne weight was utilised, ensuring compliance with weight restrictions whilst effectively removing the coatings. This approach enabled the process to be completed in-house, minimising the projects costs and time.
Following the coating removal, screed repairs became necessary due to the water ingress, which caused the topping of the screed to deteriorate. To address the water ingress issue, Flowcrete’s PMMA Deckshield Rapide, a high performance system known for its durability and reliability, was applied to the 800m2 top deck providing a robust waterproofing layer.
Additionally, a comprehensive solution was devised to prevent further water ingress. A cliff edge detail was incorporated effectively breaking the connection between the cliff edge and the car park. A bund was installed to mitigate water infiltration, therefore safeguarding the integrity of the podium deck against future deterioration.
